What is the Polish Legion of American Veterans?
The Polish Legion of American Veterans is the largest and only Congressionally chartered organization of American Veterans of Polish ancestry in the United States.
After World War I, groups of American Veterans of Polish descent banded together. They organized the Alliance of American Veterans of Polish descent in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan and the Polish Legion of the American Army in New York. In September of 1931 at Cleveland, Ohio, these organizations united into one veterans organization called the Polish Legion of American Veterans.
Why the name Polish Legion of American Veterans?
During the American Revolution, the gallant General Casmir Pulaski organized a calvary group which was called "Pulaski's Legion" or the "Polish Legion." During the Civil War, General Wladmir Krzyzanowski commanded the 58th New York Infantry Regiment which was called the "Polish Legion." Both fought and made the supreme sacrifice for America, the America worth fighting for, and we carry on their traditions and honor their memory.
